By Breaking Belize News Staff: Twenty-nine-year-old Ector Danielo Soler has been committed to stand trial in the High Court for manslaughter by negligence in connection with a fatal motorcycle collision that claimed the life of 40-year-old Celia Josefina Carballo Pleitez De Lazaro in May 2025.
Soler, a maintenance worker of Airport Plaza and resident of Ladyville, appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday, November 6, 2026, where his preliminary inquiry concluded through a paper committal.
He was informed that his case would proceed to the January 2027 session of the High Court, expected to commence in mid-January.
As previously reported by Breaking Belize News, Soler was arraigned on September 26, 2025, on three indictable traffic offences: manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, and driving without due care and attention.
The charges stem from a collision on May 25, 2025, between Miles 9 and 10 on the Philip Goldson Highway in Ladyville.
According to police investigations, 24-year-old Francisco Cortez was travelling southbound on a green Lifan motorcycle with his common-law wife, Celia, riding as a passenger.
The couple had reportedly stopped to purchase food near the Lord’s Bank junction and were returning to their home on Baltimore Road.
As Cortez approached the intersection with Marage Road around 8:00 p.m., he reportedly activated his left indicator and slowed down to make a turn.
Police allege that a red Ducati Monster motorcycle driven by Soler collided with the rear of Cortez’s motorcycle, throwing all three individuals onto the pavement.
Cortez and Soler sustained injuries, while Celia, a Guatemalan national, was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Following an investigation, the case file was submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which directed police to charge Soler.
Soler was initially granted bail of $7,000 following his September 2025 arraignment.
He will now face trial in the High Court, where the prosecution will be required to prove its case.
