By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño says Belize has moved another step forward in addressing Guatemala’s claim following notification that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will begin oral hearings involving Belize and Guatemala, as well as Belize and Honduras, in February 2027.

In his 45th Independence Day message, Briceño said Belize’s progress toward addressing its territorial dispute with Guatemala forms part of the country’s broader effort to strengthen peaceful relations with its neighbours. “Showing the world who we are also means ending those legacy issues that stand in the way of our peaceful coexistence with our neighbours,” he said.

Briceño noted that Belize was informed on September 17 that the ICJ will hear oral presentations in the Belize-Guatemala case beginning in February 2027 and will subsequently hear oral presentations in the Belize-Honduras case. “In this regard, we moved one step closer when, on the 17th of September, we were informed that, starting in February 2027, the International Court of Justice will hear oral presentations in the case between Guatemala and Belize and will then hear oral presentations in the Belize-Honduras case,” he stated.

The Prime Minister said Belize has faced the territorial dispute with Guatemala for many years and expressed confidence in the judicial process. “For too long, our borders have been disputed by our neighbour, Guatemala,” Briceño said.

He added that Belize is looking toward the conclusion of the process and improved relations with Guatemala. “We look forward to the end of this process, when we believe Belize will be vindicated and we can strengthen and enhance relations with the Government and the great Guatemalan people,” Briceño stated.
