By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño has urged Belize’s younger generation to believe in themselves and contribute to the country’s continued development, highlighting the legacy of Belize’s newest national hero, the late Gwendolyn Lizarraga.
In his Independence Day message marking Belize’s 45th anniversary, Briceño said the achievements of earlier generations should serve as inspiration for today’s young people. “Our newest national hero, the late Gwendolyn Lizarraga, is a perfect example of one who used her skills and talent to build our nation,” he said.
Briceño said Lizarraga’s contribution, together with the work of her generation, demonstrates the impact individuals can have on Belize’s development. “Through her actions and those of her generation, we can and should inspire our young people to believe in themselves and in their country,” he stated.
The Prime Minister also called on the next generation to build upon the progress made by those who came before them. “In turn, the next generation will do more than we are doing to preserve our environment, strengthen our economy, improve our social standing and uphold the values that define us as a nation,” Briceño said.
He described Independence as an opportunity to look ahead while maintaining a strong connection to Belize’s history. “This anniversary is our opportunity to stand tall, speak with confidence, and move forward together,” Briceño declared.
