By Zoila Palma: The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has reached a rare milestone, with no storm strengthening into a hurricane by September 22, marking the latest point in a season without an Atlantic hurricane since 1914. The official hurricane season continues through November 30.
Six named storms have formed so far, but none have reached the 74 mph wind threshold required to become a hurricane.
Tropical Storm Fay briefly reached maximum sustained winds of 70 mph over open water before weakening, while the National Hurricane Center continued to monitor the system.
A powerful El Niño is being cited as a major factor behind the unusually quiet Atlantic season.
The climate pattern has increased wind shear over the Atlantic, disrupting developing storm systems and making it harder for them to intensify.
Colorado State University researcher Phil Klotzbach said El Niño is “just hammering the Atlantic,” while noting that the basin has not produced anything close to a hurricane.
Despite the record-setting inactivity, forecasters warn that late September and October can still bring dangerous storms, particularly near the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. East Coast, meaning coastal communities should remain prepared.
