By Zoila Palma: Mexico has established a tariff-rate quota allowing the duty-free importation of up to 10,000 head of live cattle from Belize during 2026, opening additional market access for Belizean cattle producers.
The measure was established by Mexico’s Secretariat of Economy under an agreement setting the quota for live cattle.
The agreement provides that eligible imports can enter Mexico without the applicable import duty when the importer holds a quota certificate issued by Mexico’s Secretariat of Economy.
Mexico’s official notice notes that Belize was already an important supplier of live cattle to the Mexican market in 2025.
Mexico imported 35,566 head of live cattle that year, with Guatemala supplying 39.3%, Nicaragua 25.5%, Belize 21.3%, the United States 10.6%, Honduras 2.7%, and Australia 0.6%. The notice also states that Mexico’s apparent national consumption of live cattle was estimated at 8.8 million head in 2025.
The duty-free access remains subject to Mexico’s applicable animal health requirements.
Mexico has established animal health requirement sheets for live cattle from Belize and several other countries, including Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Australia, Chile, and New Zealand.
The Mexican government said maintaining multiple import sources helps diversify supply and complement domestic production.
