By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A 68-year-old man was brutally killed on Monday morning in San Lazaro Village, Orange Walk District, ambushed with a machete as he rode his bicycle home from his farm, and police are now seeking two men in connection with the murder.
According to the Belize Police Department, information of a chopping incident was received at 9:44 a.m. on Monday, July 13, 2026. Officers responded to a sugar road leading to the river, about a quarter mile off the main road, where they found the motionless body of an elderly man lying face down. He had suffered multiple chop wounds to the head and neck, along with other cut wounds and abrasions.
The victim was identified by his son as Virginio Carrillo, a 68-year-old Belizean watchman of San Lazaro Village.
The scene told the story of an ambush. About 15 feet from the body, police observed a black and yellow bicycle with blood on its handle, believed to be the one Carrillo was riding. Some 30 feet into the bushy area on the other side of the road, officers found a grey bicycle, and not far from it, a black machete with suspected blood.
Initial investigations revealed that Carrillo was riding from his farm toward San Lazaro Village when someone came out of the bushes and attacked him, inflicting the fatal wounds before abandoning the grey bicycle and escaping.
The scene was processed by scenes of crime personnel, and the bicycle and machete were retrieved as exhibits. Carrillo was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:32 a.m. His body awaits a post mortem examination.
Several statements have been recorded, and police have identified two men they wish to speak with in connection with the murder. No one has been detained, and no charges have been laid at this time. The identities of those sought are being withheld.
