By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A woman and her 11-year-old son escaped unharmed after gunmen opened fire on their pickup truck at the exit of the Hawksworth Bridge in Santa Elena on Monday evening, in a brazen attack that left 21 expended shells scattered on the sidewalk.

According to the Belize Police Department, information of shots fired was received at around 6:15 p.m. on Monday, July 13, 2026, at the bridge exit entering Santa Elena. Responding officers located a scene at the entrance of the bridge walkway, where 21 expended shells of various calibers, including .40 and 9mm rounds, were recovered and the area was processed by scenes of crime personnel.

Investigators learned that the shots had been fired at a 41-year-old woman of Santa Elena Town, whose vehicle was struck by the gunfire. A second scene was established at her residence, where police observed her white Ford Ranger with a bullet hole in the tailgate, a flat back tire, and a dent on the left passenger door. A .40 slug was recovered from inside the truck pan.

Most chilling of all, police report that the woman’s 11-year-old son was in the back of the pickup pan during the shooting. He escaped unharmed, and no one was injured.

Initial investigation indicates that earlier that evening, the woman had gone to the San Ignacio Police Station area after receiving a call related to dropping off food for a person detained there in connection with a murder investigation. After driving past the station and exiting the Hawksworth Bridge into Santa Elena, she came under fire. Camera footage obtained by police shows two men aboard a black motorcycle as the suspects.

Police believe the shooting may have been carried out in retaliation connected to a recent murder case. A 37-year-old Santa Elena man has been detained in connection with the incident, and police are seeking a second man. No charges have been laid at this time, and the identities of those detained or sought are being withheld pending charges.

Both scenes were processed and photographed, and statements are to be recorded as the investigation continues. Anyone with information is urged to contact the San Ignacio Police Station or Crime Stoppers at 922.
