By Breaking Belize News Staff: More than 50 young athletes from Independence Village, Seine Bight, and Placencia gathered at Bullock Island for the resort’s second annual Summer Basketball Camp the weekend before last.
The one-day camp marked the first time the event was hosted on the island since the resort’s official opening and focused on youth development, mentorship, and healthy lifestyles through sports.
Former NBA player and Bullock Island owner Reggie Bullock welcomed the participants and encouraged them to pursue their goals both on and off the court. Campers received basketball instruction in dribbling, passing, shooting, and defensive skills before taking part in friendly 1-on-1 and 3-on-3 competitions.
The camp was supported by local coaches Jordan, Gavin, Jamar, Devin, and Raheem, who volunteered their time to guide the young participants. Campers also heard motivational talks from community leaders, including Mr. Morera of the Fire Department, Eric from Holistica, and Kerwin, Vice Chairman of Seine Bight, who spoke on leadership, responsibility, wellness, and community service.
“While basketball was at the center of the camp, the greater goal was to create a positive environment where young people could build confidence, develop life skills, and connect with me and other mentors from their communities,” Bullock said.
Following the success of the camp, Bullock Island announced plans to launch an 8-week Youth Basketball Program in the summer of 2027. The program will be held every Saturday from June 19 to August 7, 2027, and will offer consistent coaching, mentorship, and opportunities for personal growth.

The resort said the Summer Basketball Camp is part of its broader commitment to community development and creating experiences that go beyond tourism by combining sports, education, and mentorship for Belizean youth.
