By Zoila Palma:  High-level delegations from the Government of Belize, the Mexican Government, and the State of Quintana Roo met on June 19 at the Princess Las Vegas Conference Room at the Santa Elena border to strengthen regional cooperation and economic ties.

The meeting focused on developing investment, trade, and economic development opportunities through a proposed Memorandum of Understanding between Belize and Quintana Roo.

Discussions centered on several key areas of the bilateral relationship, including investment promotion, attracting synchronized factories in Belize and Quintana Roo, and integrating the region’s multimodal transportation system for cargo and passengers. Particular attention was given to opportunities linked to the Tren Maya and its potential role in enhancing regional connectivity.

Among the major topics discussed were joint efforts to access the CARICOM market, opportunities in agribusiness, agro-processing, manufacturing, and energy, as well as the development of logistics and secondary transformation industries.

They also reviewed Mexico’s economic development centers, including the industrial park in Chetumal, and explored strategies for coordinated investment promotion to supply CARICOM markets.

Officials said the collaboration between Belize and Quintana Roo is expected to encourage stronger business relationships between the private sectors of both jurisdictions, improve information-sharing, and create new economic opportunities.

Representatives from Belize’s investment, foreign affairs, trade, and economic development sectors attended the meeting alongside senior Mexican and Quintana Roo government officials.
