By Zoila Palma: Over the weekend, Former UDP Chairman Alberto August was detained for an alleged cybercrime allegation.
August was detained on Saturday at his home in Santa Elena Town and taken to the San Ignacio Police station.
The UDP leadership issued statements calling for his release and citing the detention as “political victimization.”
During an interview with 7News Belize, August explained that he was released on Sunday and Prime Minister John Briceno intervened to ensure his release from custody.
“And it was because of the intervention of people like Senator Peyreffitte, the Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, the former party leader and that we were able to, I was made to contact the Prime Minister who instructed to proceed with the granting a station bail,” August said.
When asked if he is grateful to the PM for stepping in, August said that the Prime Minister’s intervention “was as a result of the stupidness of one of his ministers.”
August added that people with these “kind of character should not be wielding the power.”
