From humble beginnings to success – A tribute to Dr. Naum Bonilla from a close friend and classmate

By Arny Alcoser: We  met in our first year of high school in Room 19, then shared Room 10 in our second year. During our third and fourth years, we studied science together and talked about what the future might hold.

I remember Naum Bonilla talking about growing up in Valley of Peace Village and how determined he was to become a doctor. He never allowed where he came from or the challenges he faced to define what he could become. His goal was to make his family and his village proud, and he did exactly that.

When I say he worked hard, I truly mean it. Success did not come easily to him. When he didn’t understand something, he never gave up on learning it. He didn’t dismiss it or walk away from the challenge. Instead, he would focus even harder, put in extra time, and keep working until he understood it. While some people may have learned things quickly, he made up for it with determination, perseverance, and an incredible work ethic. He was living proof that resilience can take you farther than talent alone.

Through years of hard work and sacrifice, Naum achieved his dream of becoming a doctor. He made his family proud, he made his village proud, and he inspired many of us who knew his story.

That is why this tragedy is so difficult to accept. He worked so hard to build a life, serve others, and make a difference. It is heartbreaking that his journey was cut short in such a senseless way.

What makes this loss even more painful is that he was killed in front of his 5-year-old daughter. No child should ever have to witness such a terrible act, and no family should have to endure this kind of pain.

Rest in peace, my friend. From Room 19, to Room 10, to our years studying science together, I will always remember your determination, your resilience, and the example you set for all of us.

You overcame obstacles, achieved your dream, and left a legacy that will not be forgotten. You made your family, your village, and all who knew you proud.

Gone too soon, but never forgotten.
