Lumber yards, builders and furniture makers feel squeeze as logging policies tighten

By Zoila Palma:  Owners of lumber yards, builders, carpenters and contractors are concerned as Mahogany, prime woods and hardwood supplies become increasingly scarce.

Business owners are now warning that recent government logging policies are creating serious challenges across multiple sectors.

Lumber yards report difficulty meeting demand during what is traditionally the peak dry-season supply period, raising questions about the long-term impact of a reported five-year moratorium affecting logging permits and extraction from national lands.

The five-year moratorium, which commenced on December 1, 2025, applies to the issuance of Short-Term Forest Licences and Petty Permits for the cutting and harvesting of trees on national lands, as announced by the Government of Belize.

The lumber scarcity currently affecting Belize stems largely from policies designed to preserve the country’s forests and promote sustainable management of natural resources.

However, lumber yard owners say they have participated in numerous consultations under previous PUP and UDP administrations, during which many of these same conservation measures and long-term management strategies were proposed. Some within the industry argue that had these policies been implemented gradually and earlier, the current supply challenges facing the lumber industry might have been less severe today.

And, business owners support conservation efforts, but how can restrictions be introduced without consultation with those whose livelihoods depend on the lumber trade.

Lumber suppliers say the effects are already being felt beyond the logging sector.

Scott Varro, the Manager of Linda Vista Lumber yard in Spanish Lookout noted that businesses are increasingly forced to turn away customers due to limited stock.

Meanwhile, carpenters, contractors, prefabricated home builders, resort developers and new homeowners are reportedly struggling to source hardwood needed to complete projects and fulfill orders.

And what other alternatives are available to business owners?

Industry voices are asking whether sufficient consideration was given to lumber yards, furniture manufacturers and skilled tradesmen whose income relies directly on wood availability.

In addition, lumber yards and furniture makers employ thousands of Belizeans nationwide. Industry stakeholders are questioning what would happen to those jobs if businesses are forced to scale back or close due to a shortage of lumber and the inability to secure adequate wood supplies.
