Bullying in schools raises growing concern among parents and educators

By Zoila Palma:  Bullying in schools continues to raise concern as incidents involving both boys and girls become increasingly visible, particularly through videos circulating on social media.

In primary and high schools across Belize, bullying has become increasingly prevalent and these recordings shared widely online, have sparked public discussion about student behavior, peer pressure and the growing challenge schools face in addressing violence and intimidation among young people.

Educators and parents have expressed concern over what these incidents reveal about changing social interactions among students.

While bullying has long existed in school environments, the widespread use of phones and social media has amplified its impact, allowing confrontations to be recorded and shared beyond school grounds.

In many cases, victims not only face physical or emotional harm but also public humiliation as videos continue to circulate online.

The rise in such incidents has led many to question the role society plays in shaping youth behavior.

The increase visibility of girls engaging in bullying has also challenged traditional assumptions and highlighted that aggressive behavior can affect students across genders and age groups.

Parents and educators can work together to address the issue through open communication, early intervention and stronger support systems within schools.

Guidance through counseling, anti-bullying programs and positive role modeling are seen as important tools in helping students develop empathy and respect for others.

Additionally, many bullying cases are only exposed after previous incidents, highlighting the importance of educators recognizing warning signs within the classroom and addressing them promptly.

Addressing bullying requires a collective effort to create and ensure safer learning environments so that schools remain places of education rather than fear.
