By Zoila Palma:  Today, Former Minister of Agriculture Jose Mai issued a statement commending farmers in Blue Creek and Shipyard for an experiment with cattle in Belize.

Mai says that Belize has potential to produce quality beef.

“Thanks to these two cattle farmers Abram Froese (Sereque) and Henry Peters of Blue Creek and Shipyard respectively who carried out this interesting experiment, we obtained these results.

Abe imported Akaushi Breed semen from Monterey. Akaushi is Japanese cattle breed closely related to the broader category of Wagyu cattle. They are known for slow growth but excellent Marbling.

Abe used the semen to inseminate a Red Brangus cow. The result is F1 cross of Akaushi and Red Brangus.

The heifer was raised on pasture for 14 months and thereafter was placed in a feed lot for 23 months 2 weeks. The heifer was slaughtered last week,” Mai explained.

Mai also commended Peters who took a trip to Texas to view the process.

“Henry Peters, who owns the feed lot travelled to Texas to see how it is done and applied it here in Belize.

The photographs below show the quality that can be produced using these crosses.

Cuts from these breeds are sold to Niche Markets in Mexico and the US due to its high cost. The cost per pound ranges from $10.00 US for ground beef to $120 US for Filet Mignon/tenderloin, which is the most expensive cut.

Ribeye ranges from $45-$90.00 US

Probably because it’s a FI Cross of Akaushi and Red Brangus, we may not have similar quality as the US,” Mai further explained.

Mai says that there exists the request for cattle ranchers in Belize to start raising this cross breed to supply Niche markets in Mexico.
