By Zoila Palma: Today, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she will demand explanations following the deaths of four U.S. and Mexican officials in a weekend accident in Chihuahua, stating her administration was unaware of any collaboration between U.S. personnel and local authorities.
Sheinbaum emphasized the need to determine whether any laws were violated, noting the officials died Sunday while returning from an operation targeting clandestine drug laboratories in a rural area, AP reports.
Authorities said the mission involved dismantling facilities believed to be used by criminal groups to produce drugs.
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico confirmed the American personnel were supporting Chihuahua state authorities in efforts to combat cartel activity but declined to identify them or specify their agency. Chihuahua Attorney General César Jáuregui said the victims included two local investigative officials and two U.S. instructors participating in routine training.
“It was not an operation that the security cabinet was aware of,” Sheinbaum said, adding that such cooperation requires federal authorization under the constitution.
She stressed that while intelligence sharing with the United States exists, “there are no joint operations on land or in the air.”
The incident comes amid rising pressure from Donald Trump for Mexico to intensify its crackdown on drug cartels, adding strain to bilateral relations.
