By Zoila Palma: Today, Iran reinstated restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz, accusing the United States of violating ceasefire terms by maintaining its naval blockade, Yahoo reports. The move effectively shut down the critical waterway just a day after Iranian officials had declared it open under a temporary truce agreement.
Shortly after the announcement, two Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats opened fire on a tanker transiting the strait, according to the British military. The vessel’s captain reported that all crew members were safe. Iranian forces also ordered two additional ships to turn back, according to monitoring firm TankerTrackers.com.
Iranian military officials said control of the strait had returned to armed forces oversight, warning that restrictions would remain until the U.S. allows full freedom of navigation for Iranian-linked vessels.
Tehran maintains that Washington’s continued blockade of its ports violates the ceasefire, while U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump, indicated the blockade would stay in place despite the truce.
Shipping activity through the strait remains sharply reduced, with vessels limited to routes requiring Iranian clearance.
Before the conflict, up to 138 ships passed through daily, but only a fraction have crossed since late February.
The waterway, which carries about 20% of global oil and gas supplies, has seen prices surge since the conflict began, with recent volatility driven by shifting expectations over access.
