By Zoila Palma: U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, a Catholic, has defended President Donald Trump after an AI-generated image showing Trump in a Jesus-like form sparked backlash among Christians and conservatives.
Vance said Trump was “posting a joke” and suggested the President removed the image after realizing that “a lot of people weren’t understanding his humor.”
Vance added that Trump “likes to mix it up on social media” and described that approach as one of his “good things,” saying the President is “not filtered.”
The comments come amid growing debate over Trump’s online posts, including the now-deleted image that depicted him as a robed figure with light coming from his hands, Time reports.
Vance also addressed broader tensions between the Trump administration and the Vatican, noting that disagreements on public policy are “reasonable.” However, he suggested that the Vatican should “stick to matters of morality” while allowing the President to focus on U.S. policy decisions, even as Trump has recently criticized Pope Leo over comments calling for an end to the Iran war.
The AI-generated image has drawn criticism from several conservatives, including Republican Rep. Warren Davidson, who called it “troubling,” and former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who described it as “blasphemous.”
