By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 33-year-old man believed to be suffering from mental illness has been accused of desecrating the grave of a recently buried woman.
Jonathan Abner Flores, an unemployed resident of Mile 15 on the George Price Highway, appeared on Tuesday morning around 9:15 a.m. in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court where he was read two charges: harm of a dead body and disinterment of a body.
Police allege that on Sunday, March 1, 2026, Flores unlawfully broke into the tomb of a 63-year-old Hattieville woman who had died of natural causes and had been buried just a day earlier. He is accused of tampering with the deceased’s body.
Flores, who was unrepresented, was taken before Court #6, where the charges were read to him. However, no plea could be taken after the court expressed concern about his mental state.
During the hearing, a relative informed the court that Flores needs medical attention and that the family intends to take him to a private doctor. The sitting Senior Magistrate ordered that Flores undergo a psychiatric evaluation but noted that the offenses are bailable.
“I will not remand him,” the Senior Magistrate told the family member, explaining that she doubted he would receive a timely evaluation while in prison. She advised the family to consider posting bail and arranging a private medical assessment, and to return to court with the evaluation report once completed.
The relative, however, told the court that the family believed Flores might be safer in custody, stating that if he remained in the community, “they will kill him.”
Throughout the proceedings, Flores had several loud outbursts in court. At one point he shouted, “The only reason I nuh wah go dah jail is because I can’t handle jail. No man wah show me mercy. Then I wah go in a jail cell with someone I can’t trust. Dah nuh even wah alive woman, eh done dead.”
Despite attempts by his relative to calm him, Flores continued speaking loudly while the matter was being addressed.
The court granted him bail in the sum of $1,500 and adjourned the case until May 4, 2026.
However, by 12:00 noon, no one had posted bail on his behalf, and Flores was escorted to the Belize Central Prisonpending the posting of bail.
