By Breaking Belize News Staff: The sexual assault trial involving Dangriga radiologist Desmond Arzu continued on Wednesday in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where the prosecution officially closed its case.

Doctor Arzu, 42, remains out on bail in the matter, which was transferred from Dangriga to Belize City. The trial stems from allegations made by a woman who accused the doctor of sexually assaulting her during an ultrasound examination in March 2023.

The case was heard before a Senior Magistrate in Court #1, with Director of Public Prosecutions Cheryl-Lynn Vidal appearing on behalf of the Crown.

The prosecution’s final witness was a female doctor, after which the DPP closed the Crown’s case.

Attorneys Arthur Saldivar and Brian Neal, who are representing Doctor Arzu, informed the court that they intend to make a no-case submission on his behalf.

The Senior Magistrate adjourned the matter to May 29, 2026, when arguments on the no-case submission will be heard. A ruling on that submission is scheduled for June 11, 2026.

Doctor Arzu has been on trial since July 2024 over allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman during an abdominal ultrasound examination on March 26, 2023.

According to the complainant, the incident occurred while she was undergoing her first ultrasound procedure. She alleged that during the examination, Doctor Arzu behaved inappropriately, including allegedly inserting his fingers into her vagina and touching her breast, causing her to feel shocked and violated.

Doctor Arzu was first arraigned on May 12, 2023, and was granted bail by the lower court.
