By Zoila Palma: On February 24, 2026, the Institute for Social and Cultural Research commenced a three-day Workshop on the Safeguarding of African Descendants Intangible Cultural Heritage in partnership with the Central America Integration System (SICA) and UNESCO.
The workshop focuses on building the capacity of African descendants to document and safeguard their living heritage along with our Central American neighbors.
Leaders and friends of the National Kriol Council and National Garifuna Council are participating in the event held at the Belize City House of Culture.
“The facilitators from CECC/SICA and CRESPIAL are providing technical support in this project as we learn how our Central American counterparts are safeguarding their heritage in their communities,” the Institute said.
The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) under the leadership of Minister Francis Fonseca, as Minister of Culture, remains committed to promoting and advancing the safeguarding of shared African living heritage of Central America.
