By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 39-year-old accountant is on remand at the Belize Central Prison following a disturbing domestic dispute in Hattieville that allegedly escalated to violence and the brandishing of a Sig Sauer M17 CO2-powered semi-automatic air pistol.

Mikael Sosa was rushed to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, where he was arraigned on two criminal charges: one count of harm upon his wife and one count of aggravated assault with a dangerous instrument, to wit, a Sig Sauer brand M17 CO2-powered semi-automatic air pistol.

Sosa, who was represented by Attorney Orson “OJ” Elrington, pleaded not guilty to both charges.

The prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that the offense falls under the Firearms Act. However, Elrington argued that the charge was not levied under the Firearms Act and does not fall within its provisions. He further submitted that his client is not a flight risk and that the court could impose strict bail conditions, which Sosa would abide by.

But Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison was not persuaded that bail should be granted in light of the increasing incidents of domestic violence in the country. The Magistrate expressed concern over the close proximity between Sosa and his wife and denied bail, stating that the issue is one for “a court of superiority” to determine.

Sosa was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until April 17, 2026. His attorney has indicated that he intends to apply for bail in the High Court as soon as possible.

The charges stem from an incident in which Sosa’s wife reported that she was at home when she discovered a locked chat conversation on his laptop between Sosa and a woman he allegedly had an affair with. According to the report, Sosa entered the room and found her on the laptop, leading to a confrontation.

Police say the couple got into an argument and struggled over the laptop. The situation reportedly escalated when Sosa’s cell phone fell and broke. His wife alleges that he then punched her in the face.

She further reported that Sosa threatened to kill her and pulled out the Sig Sauer M17 air pistol, placing it against her face, causing her to fear for her life.

A medical examination conducted afterward reportedly documented visible injuries, including a bruise under the left breast, a swollen pinky finger, apparent bite marks on the right shoulder, and bruising to the left cheek area.

Sosa is scheduled to return to court on April 17, 2026.
