By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has concluded its final Special Constituency Conventions ahead of the National Convention scheduled for November 30. The recent conventions held in Toledo East and Stann Creek West marked a hopeful chapter for the party as it aims to redefine its leadership and purpose.
In a message on social media, Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the UDP, reflected on the hurdles the party has overcome. “We have come a long way from attempted coups, legal battles, and the cloud of division that engulfed the UDP,” he stated, expressing pride in the resilience and commitment shown by party members.
Barrow expressed gratitude to all participants, including applicants, candidates, and voters. Particularly noted for his leadership during turbulent times was Acting Party Chairman Alberto August, along with the Leadership Executive and Party elders, who played crucial roles in stabilizing the party and navigating the internal challenges it faced over recent years.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming National Convention, Barrow emphasized the importance of deliberate leadership. He stated, “Leaders come and go, but the purpose remains… to use our beloved Political organization to better the lives of our fellow Belizeans.” He expressed hope that his successor, alongside newly elected deputies and a new Party Chairman, would possess the wisdom and political will necessary to serve the Belizean people effectively.
In concluding, Barrow impressed, “The UDP Constitution has been upheld, the rule of law has prevailed and our Democracy preserved”.
