By Breaking Belize News Staff: Reports out of Petén, Guatemala, suggest that Joseph Ryan Budna has been captured in Melchor de Mencos. Guatemalan media state that Budna, who twice escaped their custody in the past, was detained again and is wanted on an international arrest warrant for the crime of escape. That warrant was issued in 2019 by the Guatemalan courts after Budna fled from the San Benito Hospital in Petén.
But Budna’s last known appearance was not in Guatemala; it was in Belize. On Friday night, he was standing outside the Orange Walk Police Station before suddenly disappearing. His vehicle and belongings were left at the scene, and police later confirmed they had taken them into custody.
The contradiction between Guatemalan and Belizean timelines is fueling speculation about how Budna moved from Orange Walk Town to Petén. Whether he crossed voluntarily, was taken by unknown persons, or handed over unofficially is unclear. Both Belizean and Guatemalan officials remain tight-lipped, and Budna’s disappearance is now the subject of growing regional intrigue.
