By Zoila Palma: The Trump Administration is directing immigration agents to track and deport hundreds of thousands of unaccompanied migrant children who entered the U.S. illegally, according to an internal memo reviewed by Reuters.
This new initiative expands the administration’s mass deportation efforts, targeting children who crossed the border without parents or guardians.
The memo outlines a four-phase operation, starting with planning on January 27, though enforcement start dates remain unclear.
Since 2019, over 600,000 unaccompanied minors have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border, with tens of thousands ordered deported, including those who missed court hearings.
The initiative aims to prevent exploitation and human trafficking of minors.
ICE has categorized children into three groups—flight risk, public safety, and border security—focusing on those ordered deported for missing court hearings or released to non-relative sponsors. ICE plans to use multiple databases to track these children.
Additionally, ICE is tightening sponsor vetting procedures and using DNA tests to verify familial relationships.
