By Zoila Palma: El Salvador has agreed to house violent U.S. criminals and accept deportees of any nationality, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced after meeting with President Nayib Bukele, CNN reports.
The deal, which has raised legal and human rights concerns, will allow El Salvador to accept U.S. criminal deportees, including those from notorious gangs like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, and house them in the country’s mega-prisons.
Bukele confirmed the agreement, stating that El Salvador would house only convicted criminals in exchange for a fee.
However, the deal faces legal challenges, as U.S. law prohibits the deportation of U.S. citizens, even if incarcerated.
The arrangement has sparked mixed reactions. Critics argue it violates international laws on migrants’ rights, while supporters, including Trump administration allies, praise the initiative as a step toward tackling gang violence and illegal immigration.
The deal is part of a broader push to strengthen U.S. immigration policies and reduce gang-related crime.
