By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 25-year-old Belize City man accused of murder abruptly changed his plea to guilty in the High Court this week after prosecutors presented powerful video evidence capturing the fatal shooting.
Lyson James Cacho, who was on trial before Justice Candace Nanton for the murder of 23-year-old Jordan Waight, initially pleaded not guilty. However, following the presentation of surveillance footage showing the killing, Cacho reversed his plea mid-trial.
Justice Nanton accepted the guilty plea and has set sentencing for Monday, June 15, 2026, when mitigation submissions will be heard.
The trial began on Monday, April 27, 2026. During proceedings, the prosecution called key witnesses, including a Scenes of Crime Technician and an IT Specialist from the Belize Police Department, who introduced video footage that reportedly captured the entire incident.
The footage showed that on the morning of November 23, 2023, Waight and others were gathered in a yard on Barbara Harris Street. At around 9:00 a.m., Waight walked away from the group. Moments later, Cacho mounted a bicycle, rode up behind him, and fired a single fatal shot to the back of his head in broad daylight.
After the video was played in court, Cacho consulted with his attorney, Ian Gray, and upon returning to court on Tuesday afternoon, opted not to continue contesting the charge. His guilty plea brought an immediate end to the trial, despite the prosecution being prepared to call five additional witnesses.
Cacho had been charged with Waight’s murder following an investigation that included surveillance footage retrieved by police. According to reports, Waight was shot on Barbara Harris Street shortly after 9:00 a.m. and transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:15 a.m.
Police say the lone gunman, described as a dark-complexioned male of medium build with dreadlocks and wearing a red shirt, carried out the attack from a bicycle before fleeing the scene.
Cacho was detained in early May 2024 and formally arraigned on May 6, 2025. He has remained on remand since that date, totaling just over 11 months.
Notably, Cacho had previously faced serious charges in 2015, including murder and attempted murder, but was acquitted in that case.
He now awaits sentencing in June, where the court will determine his fate following his admission of guilt in the 2023 killing of Jordan Waight.
