By Horace Palacio: The Ministry of National Defence and Border Security has confirmed a tragic shooting incident involving members of the Belize Defence Force (BDF) at the Crique Sarco Patrol Base on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m., resulting in the death of one BDF soldier and injuries to another. Preliminary reports indicate that both individuals sustained gunshot wounds inflicted by another member of the patrol team. The soldier who succumbed to his injuries suffered multiple gunshot wounds, while the injured patrol member sustained two gunshot wounds and is currently in stable condition, receiving treatment at Punta Gorda Hospital.
The Belize Police Department is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, the First Infantry Battalion has taken steps to ensure the continued security of the Crique Sarco Patrol Base.
The Belize Defence Force has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the sovereignty of Belize and ensuring the safety and discipline of its personnel.
The Commander of the Belize Defence Force, along with officers and soldiers, has extended heartfelt condolences to the families of both soldiers involved in this tragic event. Welfare officers have visited the families to provide comfort and support during this difficult time.
The Belize Defence Force honors the life and memory of the soldier who lost his life in the line of duty and remains steadfast in upholding the values of service and dedication.
