By Zoila Palma: A widespread power blackout struck most of Cuba on Wednesday, including the capital Havana, as the state electric utility said an unexpected outage at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant caused the failure.
The shutdown cut electricity across a large part of the island, from Pinar del Río in the far west to Camagüey, leaving only the far eastern provinces with power.
Officials said the outage at the generating station, located about 100 kilometers east of Havana, could take three to four days to repair.
Engineers are working to fix problems in the boiler’s superheater and other leaks to restore electricity production, Reuters report.
The crisis comes as Cuba faces severe fuel shortages linked to U.S. pressure that has reduced oil shipments to the island, particularly from its main supplier Venezuela.
The shortages have forced the government to ration key services such as transportation and trash collection, while years of sanctions and limited investment have strained the country’s aging power infrastructure.
