By Aaron Humes: If you’d like a job and are interested in the sugar cane industry, Santander Sugar Group has an offer for you.

With the next harvest season set for January, Santander is reaching out to interested applicants for various mechanical and scientific jobs – a total of between 80 and 120, according to Erwin Garcia, head of Human Resources at the manufacturer.

Based in the Valley of Peace area of the Cayo District, Santander produces and mills sugar for export and some electricity from bagasse.

“What we’re looking for here, this is our eighth harvest season coming up in January, and right now we are hiring mechanics, welders, technicians, electro-mechanics – [air conditioning] technicians, and vehicles and agricultural equipment,” said Garcia, adding that drivers will be needed in the harvest season itself to haul 50-foot sugar cane trailers, traffic wardens and field clerks to oversee the movement of the trucks and operate the automated system for movement.

Workers are also needed in the factory—industrial operators and mechanics to oversee plant equipment, between 80 and 90 in total. The position is entry-level and requires no specific previous experience—all you need is a clean police record, a Social Security card, and a bank account.

About 200 to 300 workers will be needed, as many as 400 in some years, to work on the sugar cane farms.

For laboratory and quality control supervisors, a degree in chemistry or biology is required; for supervisory positions at the factory, a degree in engineering is required.

To apply, visit santandersugar.com and fill out the auto-fill application form, or email humanresource@santandersugar.com, or WhatsApp to 671-3780. The harvest starts on January 6 so apply as soon as possible – first come, first served.

Wages range depending on experience; training is included for some jobs. Garcia says the company can retain 30 to 40 percent of its workforce once the season is over based on performance, though not necessarily for the same jobs.
