NEMO Advisory #6
The National Meteorological Service of Belize and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby inform the general public that at 12:00 midday (local time), Hurricane Beryl was located near latitude 19.2N, longitude 83.4W or about 331 miles east-northeast of Corozal Town. Beryl was moving to the west-northwest at 18 mph with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph (category 2). A west to west-northwestward motion is expected today until the hurricane makes landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico later tonight into early Friday morning.
Although a direct landfall on Belize is unlikely, this system is likely to continue producing moderate to heavy rainfall across Belize starting today, and continuing through the next 24 to 36 hours as it moves across the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Rainfall totals of 4 to 6 inches are possible with locally higher amounts especially over the northern districts. This may lead to flooding over low-lying and flood prone areas given that soils in the area are already saturated. Gusty winds to tropical storm force are possible in the extreme north of the country as the system makes landfall later tonight into Friday morning. Strong thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and squally conditions are also possible in feeder bands over other areas of the country. Sea conditions are expected to become rough with large battering waves especially over the northern offshore areas and operators of small crafts are advised to seek and remain in safe harbour.
A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect from Belize City to Corozal, including the islands of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.
The watch will remain in place until the system makes landfall. A tropical storm warning will not be necessary for any parts of Belize.
Based on the latest advisory, the Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize, and the Chairman of NEMO announces that businesses in the Orange Walk District remain open for the remainder of the day.
NEMO continues to advise the general public to:
- Put your family/emergency plan into action, check your emergency food, water and medical supplies. Check on the elderly and people with disability. This is particularly important for residents in the Corozal and Orange Walk Districts, and San Pedro and Caye Caulker.
- Make early preparations to leave high risk areas; voluntarily relocate to safe location if you live in a low-lying area-vulnerable coastal community in the northern districts and the Cayes. Know which shelter you will go to.
- Shelters have been identified in the Corozal District, Orange Walk District and San Pedro
Town. These will open if required.
- Municipalities and the public are advised to continue to clear drains to reduce flooding.
- Interests in the agriculture sector are asked to continue preparations. Fisherfolk are also asked to continue securing assets in anticipation of rough sea conditions. Interests in the tourism sector are asked to keep visitors and guests informed of the status of Hurricane Beryl.
Residents are advised to continue monitoring this system very closely and to follow official information coming from NEMO and the Met Service. Countrywide, all NEMO district emergency operations centers remain activated.
Stay alert, be prepared. Stay tuned for the National Met Service weather bulletins and the latest
NEMO advisories.
