Premier Women’s League of Belize: Sagitun GIRLZ advance to Finals on 1-1 draw against Napoles

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Second-seeded Sagitun GIRLZ qualified to the Premier Women’s League of Belize Finals on a 1-1 draw against third-seeded Napoles on Saturday at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence.

Kaite Jones put Napoles ahead quite early in the third minute if play levelling the semifinals at 1-1 after last week’s 1-0 Sagitun GIRLZ win in Belmopan.

But just like last week, Pauline Linarez struck for Sagitun GIRLZ. Her 79^th minute header off a corner kick tied the match at 1-1 and gave the MidSouth club a 2-1 aggregate victory and their ticket to the Finals.

“In the regular season, she hit the cross bars, hit the posts and missed the goal so many times!” Sagitun GIRLZ posted on social media after the match.

“We always joke about it, we tell her, P, your goals only make an appearance in the big games! She lived up to that! With a goal in each of the Semifinal legs, @its_pritti_p delivered!! Big occasions call for big players!!”

This coming Saturday, the Sagitun GIRLZ should host top-seeded Jewel Fury at the Michael Ashcroft in the first leg. The return match will be the following weekend at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan.

“Tough game today, but we go home with a much needed win!” Sagitun GIRLZ said in a social media post after the game.

Sagitun GIRLZ won the game from a penalty kick in the 72^nd minute.

The return match is now set for Saturday evening at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence.

The Sagitun GIRLZ, who won the last National Amateur Women’s League championship organized by the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) last December.

Jewel Fury were the dominant NAWL team winning several national titles.

Makes for a great Final series.
