AFP and France Info-Martinique la 1ère reports that heavy rains and flooding in the Dominican Republic and Haiti have left 19 dead and thousands displaced since last week, according to a new toll released today (Thursday, April 16) by official sources and the Red Cross.
A previous report indicated seven deaths in the Dominican Republic. Haitian Civil Protection also reported 12 deaths across several departments. Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms began on the night of April 7 and continued for more than a week.
In the Dominican Republic, authorities are maintaining preventative alerts in 24 of the country’s 31 provinces, even though the intensity of the rain has decreased in recent hours.
“Five bodies have been recovered,” Civil Defense Director Juan Salas told AFP, while two other people died last week.
The Emergency Operations Center (COE) also indicated that at least 30,500 people have been displaced and evacuated in the Caribbean nation.
Some 6,500 homes have been affected, and 38 communities have been isolated. Torrential rains last week led to school closures and reduced work hours, in addition to causing power outages in the capital, Santo Domingo. The rains are affecting the entire island of Hispaniola, which the Dominican Republic shares with Haiti, and the Dominican Meteorological Institute is forecasting more rain and hail in the coming days.
