By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 50-year-old man has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison following allegations that he raped a 12-year-old girl, who is now reportedly seven weeks pregnant.
Kermit Meighan, a resident of Belize City, appeared unrepresented in court on April 2, 2026. He faces three indictable criminal offenses: one count of rape of a child and two counts of sexual assault.
According to court reports, the sexual assault charges stem from two separate incidents in 2024. The victim alleged that Meighan touched her inappropriately on two occasions while she was at a residence where her mother had left her and her siblings.
The rape incident reportedly occurred in April 2025. The victim informed police that Meighan woke her up and took her to a separate room where the assault took place.
The matter was brought to the attention of authorities on March 24, 2026. A subsequent medical examination confirmed that the minor had been “carnally known,” with her injuries classified as grievous harm. The examining physician further confirmed that the 12-year-old is currently seven weeks pregnant.
While police concluded an initial phase of the investigation in June 2025, formal charges were not levied against Meighan until March 31, 2026.
During his arraignment, no plea was taken as the offenses are indictable matters to be heard in the High Court. Due to the gravity of the charges, bail was denied.
Meighan has been remanded to custody and is scheduled to return to court on July 27, 2026.
