By Aaron Humes: What is poverty? It’s about more than “no money no deh,” says the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

26.4 percent of households in Belize were found to be multi-dimensionally poor – 24,396 households or more than 103 thousand persons. The incidence of multidimensional poverty fell 10 percent but intensity only dipped slightly.

Employment figures improved in the wake of the pandemic as did food security, while access to internet, improved sanitation, and ownership of assets became the leading contributors to multidimensional poverty.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) includes both direct and indirect measures of poverty, the latter including food security, health, education, living standards, and employment, equally weighted. The additional questions were asked during the Labour Force Survey conducted in September 2023. The final figures are measured between 0 and 1, where the higher figures indicate a greater level of multidimensional poverty – if the figure is greater than 0.25 it would be considered multidimensionally poor. The MPI multiplies the incidence and intensity of Multidimensional poverty.
