By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton is questioning what she estimates was $1 million spent on a political convention held Sunday.
In a statement titled “What We Want To Know,” Panton said the spending comes while families struggle to put food on the table, pay bills and afford basic necessities.
“This is not just excessive, it is an urgent warning about whose interests our politics truly serves,” she wrote.
Panton argued the situation makes the case for campaign finance reform.
“Where is this money coming from? Who is bankrolling these extravagant political spectacles? More importantly, what are they expecting in return?”
She asked who is safeguarding democracy, who is confronting the decline of the productive sector and the rising cost of living, and who is holding public officials accountable for corruption and the misuse of public resources.
“The shirts, flags, food, drinks, music and handouts from today’s convention will soon be forgotten,” she wrote. “The consequences of unchecked political spending, hidden financiers and transactional politics could burden Belize for generations.”
“Stay Awake Belize,” the statement concludes.
