By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Today, Belizean rapper and former politician Moses “Shyne” Barrow turns 48.
Like him or hate him, few Belizeans have lived a story quite like his.
Born in Belize City on November 8, 1978, Shyne grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and burst onto the hip hop scene in the late 1990s with Bad Boy Records. His debut album went platinum and made him one of the most talked about young voices in the music industry.
Then it all came crashing down. Shyne was convicted in connection with a 1999 New York nightclub shooting and spent close to a decade in prison. After his release, he was deported to Belize in 2009.
Many would have given up. Shyne didn’t.
He rebuilt his life at home, entered politics and in 2020 won the Mesopotamia seat in Belize City. He went on to become Leader of the UDP and Leader of the Opposition. Even after losing his seat in the 2025 general election, he has kept pushing forward.
This year, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso declared April 25, 2026 as “Shyne Day” in Brooklyn and presented him with the Key to Brooklyn. He has also told his story in the Hulu documentary The Honorable Shyne, carrying Belize’s name to audiences around the world.
Happy birthday, Shyne.
