By Zoila Palma:  Twenty-eight high school students and 10 teachers are now better equipped to promote healthy lifestyles among their peers following a Nutrition Youth Advocate training session held on Friday, August 28.

The initiative was organized by the Ministry of Health and Wellness in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, UNICEF and Taiwan ICDF.

The training forms part of the Nutrition Youth Advocate Program, an important component of the “Healthy Habits, Healthy Schools, Healthy Belize Initiative”.

The program seeks to foster a healthier school culture by promoting good nutrition, physical activity and positive lifestyle choices, while placing young people at the center of efforts to encourage healthy behaviour among their peers.

During the session, students and teachers explored key topics including nutrition, physical activity, health promotion, leadership and drug prevention.

To support their work as youth advocates, participating students received school bags containing stationery, youth advocate vests, T-shirts and educational nutrition posters.

Following the training, the students are expected to work alongside their teachers and fellow students to develop and implement activities that promote health and wellness in their schools.

Through youth leadership and collaboration, the program aims to empower students to become advocates for healthier habits and contribute to building healthier school communities across Belize.
