By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Yabra have emerged as the champions of the Belize District Football Association (BDFA) Under-17 Championship following an one-sided 4-1 penalty shootout victory over Berger United. The championship match, held at the Marion Jones Sports Complex on Saturday, December 28, ended in a 2-2 draw in regulation time, leading to the decisive penalty shootout.
Esmond Sanker was the star of the match for Yabra, scoring twice in the 45th and 60th minutes. Berger United’s goals came from Kadeem Oliva in the 26th minute and Elijah Willoughby in the 52nd minute, keeping the contest even until the end of regulation time.
In the subsequent penalty shootout, Yabra’s Sanker, Tyrone Linarez, Calvin Thurton, and Michael Martinez successfully converted their penalty kicks, while Berger United’s central defender-turned-goalkeeper Zaahir Martin scored his team’s only penalty kick.
Following the shootout, Yabra were awarded the winners’ trophy. Esmond Sanker was deservedly voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his outstanding performance. Calvin Thurton received the Most Goals Award, and the Best Goalkeeper Award went to Belize United’s Hayden Gibson.
