By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Athletics is generally the only sport in which Belize has aspirations to increase the medal count at the CODICADER Games, since most of our participation is in team sports, in which we usually struggle. However, this year, our team sports medal count is nearly the same as athletics.

This year, Belize’s medal count at the Under 18 CODICADER Games in El Salvador stands at eight total (one gold, one silver, and six bronze), with one more to be added on Thursday, the last day of competition.

With Belize improving in team sports, three of Belize’s medals so far have come from team sports. One more will be added today when the Gwen Lizarraga High School boys play the basketball final.

On Wednesday, Belmopan Comprehensive School earned the bronze medal in girls’ football. Before that, on Monday, St John’s College captured bronze in boys’ volleyball, and St Catherine Academy also got bronze in girls’ volleyball.

The expected haul in athletics was hard-pressed this year, and after three days of competition, our young athletes managed to earn five medals. Three were captured in the first two days by Nyasha Harris – gold in the 100m, silver in the 200m, and a shared bronze with Emani Sandoval, Odierre Bautista, and Isis Casimiro in the 4x100m – and two other bronze medals through the efforts of Tamia Bennett in the girls’ high jump and Austin Lennan in the boys’ high jump.

No more athletics medals were forthcoming on the third and last day of track and field on Wednesday. Our only hope left for a second gold is now up to Gwen Liz, who are playing the boys’ basketball final against Panamanian school Gaston Faraudo P. at 2:30 pm on Thursday.

Belize is at a disadvantage against the other Central American countries that send athletes in all team and individual sports to the games and who rake in a town-load of medals, particularly in individual sports such as athletics, chess, taekwondo, and swimming, apart from team sports. Belize has only been able to send athletes in some team sports, such as volleyball, football, and basketball, and normally only sends an athletics contingent for individual sports. This year, we also had a six-athlete judo contingent, but unfortunately, we didn’t medal.

Up to Wednesday, Costa Rica led with 41 gold, 48 silver, and 41 bronze for a total of 130. Guatemala was second with 109, split 38, 36, and 35 in gold, silver, and bronze. Host country, El Salvador, was third with 86 (35, 20, and 31).
