By Zoila Palma:  From August 1–7, countries around the globe mark World Breastfeeding Week, an annual campaign supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and health ministries to promote breastfeeding as a key to child survival and lifelong health.

Under the banner of WHO’s ongoing Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures campaign, World Breastfeeding Week will shine a particular spotlight on the ongoing support women and babies need from the healthcare system through their breastfeeding journey.

Despite its proven benefits, fewer than half of babies under six months are exclusively breastfed, WHO noted.

This year’s focus is on building supportive environments—at home, in the workplace, and in healthcare systems—so that mothers can successfully breastfeed for as long as they choose.

Health officials emphasize that investing in breastfeeding support isn’t just good health policy—it’s also smart economics, reducing healthcare costs, boosting child development, and strengthening societies.
