By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, Rossana Briceno highlights Belizean women weekly for their resilience and determination.

Today’s feature is on Cancer Warrior Felipa Briceno-Reyes.

Felipa stands as a courageous warrior who bravely confronted cancer with resilience and determination.

Her journey exemplifies strength in the face of adversity and serves as an inspiration to many. Through her battle, she displayed unwavering resolve, drawing upon inner fortitude and the support of loved ones.

Briceno-Reyes’ story reflects not only her triumph but also underscores the importance of hope, perseverance, and the power of the human spirit in overcoming life’s greatest challenges.

In 2019, she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 48. She vividly remembers allowing the news to sink in. She then turned to her husband and asked, “How will I tell my daughters?”

Felipa underwent surgery to make matters worse when she was scheduled to begin her chemotherapy, which was when the COVID-19 pandemic began in Belize.

The fear she and her family had felt is still unexplainable until now. Her family made sure to practice all safety measures to keep her safe since Felipa was already feeling weak after her first chemotherapy.

But it did not end there, Belize then had to close its borders due to Covid-19 numbers rising, making it exceedingly difficult for her to go to Merida, Mexico which was where she was getting her chemotherapy.

We all know that it is particularly important to stick with your medical regimen, especially in circumstances like these, so her family went back to the board and worked out how she would continue getting her treatment on time, which thankfully worked out.

Felipa then underwent radiation in Merida, Mexico, which kept her away from her family for 5 weeks. She was desperate to see them, but when she arrived in Belize, she had to wait an additional 2 weeks to be with her family due to quarantine measures. She remembers seeing her daughters and grandkids through the window and missing them so dearly.

Fast forward to today’s date, Felipa is still cancer-free and still working at Bowen & Bowen Ltd. as their office administrator. She does regular checkups, and her lifestyle changed completely.

Felipa urges all women to take preventative measures for early detection.

For those who are currently fighting cancer, she encourages you to keep strong and never give up and surround yourself with positive individuals.”
