By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City graveyard caretaker was fined after pleading guilty to possession of controlled drugs when police found 30.6 grams (little more than an ounce) of marijuana at his home.

Shaquille Phillip Neal, 33, a Belize City Council graveyard assistant/caretaker and part-time fisherman, appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was read a single charge of possession of controlled drugs.

Neal wasted no time and pleaded guilty.

“I was wrong. Cops came and they found the suspected cannabis. It was over the amount and so I am guilty,” Neal told the court.

He added, “When yuh wrong, yuh wrong and yuh have to accept when you are wrong.”

According to police, around 7:00 a.m. on May 22, officers attached to the GI3 Anti-Narcotics Unit conducted a joint operation in the Saint Martin de Porres area and executed a search warrant at Neal’s home. During the search, police found a small plastic bag containing green leafy substances suspected to be cannabis.

Police say Neal was shown the suspected drugs and taken to the Queen Street Police Station, where he was told that if the amount exceeded 10 grams, he would be charged, but if it did not, the drugs would be returned to him.

However, when weighed, the cannabis amounted to 30.6 grams — more than three times the 10 grams allowed under Belize’s decriminalization threshold.

For his guilty plea, Neal was fined $300 plus $5 cost of court, which he must pay by July 30, 2026, or face three months in prison.
