The Belize Association of Principals of Secondary Schools (BAPSS) successfully concluded its highly anticipated Annual Secondary Education Conference held on April 16 and 17, 2026, at the San Jose Succotz Welcome Center.
The two-day summit, themed “Innovate, Inspire, Ignite: Elevating Secondary Education in Belize,” provided a vital platform for school leaders to address the evolving education landscape and foster collaborations.
Ms. J. Vanessa Neal, Chair of BAPSS, opened the event with a powerful call to action, urging principals to bridge the gap between policy and classroom practice. Ms. Neal stated, “We are at a crucial juncture.” “The challenges we face—from technology integration to inclusive practices—require a collective ignition.”
The conference was marked by the presence of distinguished guests and political leadership, including the chairman of San Jose Succotz, Mr. Armando Cocom, and His Worship Jorge Rosales of the municipality of Benque Viejo del Carmen.
The event featured a high-caliber lineup of speakers and panelists who provided profound insights into the future of Belizean education:
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Cynthia Eve Aird, Provost of Galen University, who set the tone for innovation.
Expert Panelists: The discourse was enriched by Dr. Desiree Armstrong (Special Education Officer, MoECSST), Mrs. Nadia Caliz (President of the BNTU), Mr. Jarrus Mitchell (STEM Specialist, STEM U Foundation), Mrs. Karen Canto (Former E.P. Yorke High School Principal), Ms. Melissa Andrade (General Manager of Government Schools, MoECSST), and, in the absence of Ms. Maria Zabaneh (Chair of G.A.M.A.S.), Dr. Salome Tillett.
The workshop session was expertly guided by facilitator Ms. Deborah Reneau, with the proceedings gracefully managed by masters of ceremonies Mrs. Shary Medina and Mr. Emil August. The event also featured moving contributions from Mr. Victor Miranda (MCHS principal), Pastor Edwin Miller, and the talented students of Eden SDA High School, who provided the morning’s spiritual and patriotic opening.
Western BAPSS wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors, presenters, and the dedicated principals who attended. The organizers emphasized that the conference, which included a detailed objectives overview by Mrs. Indira Bowden, chair of Western BAPSS, was a definitive step toward ensuring that no student, teacher, or support staff is left behind in an increasingly challenging world.
As the conference concluded, Belize’s educational leaders left San Jose Succotz empowered to ignite change in their staff and students, elevating secondary education standards across the Jewel.
