By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Wesley College clinched a dramatic 6-5 victory in a penalty shootout against Anglican Cathedral College (ACC) after a 1-1 draw in extra time, securing their spot in the Central Secondary Schools Sports Association (CSSSA) Boys Football Championship Final. The semifinal match took place on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City.
The evenly matched contest remained scoreless throughout regular time, pushing the game into extra time. Deon Yorke broke the deadlock in the 92nd minute, giving ACC a 1-0 lead. However, Giliyjon Nunez leveled the score for Wesley in the 110th minute, setting the stage for a nail-biting penalty shootout.
The shootout was equally intense, with both teams converting all their shots in the initial round of five. It was in the first sudden death round that Wesley secured the victory when ACC missed their attempt, and Wesley’s player successfully converted.
Wesley will now face defending champions Gwen Lizarraga High School (Gwen Liz) in the final on Saturday at the same venue. Gwen Liz advanced to the final by defeating Sadie Vernon Technical High School 4-1 in the other semifinal.
The CSSSA champions will earn the right to advance to the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) championship, which will be hosted by Mount Carmel High School in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Friday, February 21, 2025.
