By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: As of January 1, 2025, passengers using water taxis are facing higher fares. Round-trip fees have increased by $2, while one-way ticket prices have risen by $1.
The hike, according to water taxi companies, is a result of new regulations set by the Belize Port Authority.
A release from the Port Authority explains that the passenger user fee for water taxi services will now be $3.00 per passenger on fares that range from $10.00 to $100.00.
The increase comes after the fee had been temporarily reduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide financial relief to both operators and passengers.
However, with the recovery of the economy, the Port Authority has decided to reinstate the full fee.
The release stated, “With the recovery of the economy, the Belize Port Authority will now revert to the full fee, which will be applied to tickets purchased on or after January 1, 2025. This adjustment is necessary to ensure the continued safety, security, and maintenance of maritime services.”
Passengers can expect to pay the new rates for any tickets purchased from the start of the year onward.
