By Zoila Palma: As Belize’s March 12 general elections approach, voters in some divisions will encounter an unusual situation: two separate factions of the United Democratic Party (UDP), led by Shyne Barrow and Tracy Panton, both using the color red on their ballots.
The Elections and Boundaries Commission has decided that both factions will use red, though with different symbols to distinguish them.
According to reports, commission members were given several options, including using traditional UDP red with various symbols or even choosing colors other than red.
After a vote, most members opted for “Traditional UDP Red with Different Symbols.”
This situation is uncharted territory for the commission, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to determine the next steps ahead of Election Day.
Voters will need to be especially attentive as they head to the polls on March 12.
