By Horace Palacio: Elvia Vega, independent candidate for Corozal Bay, has opened up about the challenges she’s faced in her political journey, including a lack of support from her brother’s family.
Vega, who is vying to reclaim the seat once held by her late brother, David “Dido” Vega, stated that her decision to enter politics was driven by a desire to continue his legacy. Despite her commitment to honoring her brother’s work, Vega revealed that his family has not supported her campaign, a stance she says is unsurprising.
“My brother’s family wasn’t exactly supportive of him, so I’m not surprised that they’ve chosen not to support me either,” Vega remarked. She emphasized that her campaign is rooted in serving the people of Corozal Bay and building upon the foundation her brother laid during his time in office.
Thea Garcia Ramirez, Vega’s opponent from the People’s United Party (PUP), has remained unfazed by Vega’s independent bid. However, Vega maintains that her candidacy represents the continuation of her brother’s mission to uplift the community, regardless of the familial challenges she faces.
With the general elections approaching, Vega is determined to push forward, stating that her focus remains on representing the interests of the people of Corozal Bay, whether or not she has the support of her brother’s family.
