By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The municipal convention season has claimed its first incumbent. Maclovio Ack defeated sitting Mayor Carlos “Obeah” Galvez in Sunday’s People’s United Party convention in Punta Gorda Town, taking 554 votes to the mayor’s 392 and earning the right to carry the PUP banner into the March 2027 municipal elections.
The three-way race saw Dr. Francis Arzu finish third with 209 votes, out of 1,233 ballots cast, with 20 ballots rejected, according to results first reported by PGTV News.
Voters also selected the councillor slate that will run alongside Ack: Gloria Avila topped the field with 692 votes, followed by Anthony Fuentes with 636, Kerlin Moreira and Olivia Sho tied at 544 apiece, Indira Coleman with 541, and Roberto Virez with 516.
The result stands in sharp contrast to the season’s other major convention. Just over a week ago in Corozal Town, three-time Mayor Rigo Vellos beat back a well-funded challenge to win his party’s nomination decisively, calling the contest a test taken “to the extreme.” Punta Gorda’s voters, facing their own choice between continuity and change, went the other way, and the convention season now has one incumbent standing and one unseated.
For Galvez, the defeat ends his tenure as the party’s standard bearer in the southern town. For the PUP, the task in Punta Gorda mirrors the one in Corozal: converting a contested convention into a united March machine, this time behind a new face.
The United Democratic Party’s candidate for Punta Gorda has yet to be confirmed, and the matchup for the southern town’s top seat will complete itself in the weeks ahead.
The municipal map is filling in steadily, with Corozal settled, Belmopan’s battle lines drawn, and now Punta Gorda decided. Breaking Belize News will continue covering the conventions and candidate announcements as March 2027 approaches.
