By Aaron Humes: Berry Street, Belize City resident Ulide Allen, facing a charge of being a member of a gang and a separate charge of handling stolen goods, was on Thursday granted bail for yet another charge, this time of contempt of a judicial order.

Allen, out on bail since June 15, was accused of, on January 3, 2024, failing to report to Mahogany Street Police Station as ordered in his conditions to bail, to wit every Monday and Wednesday between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. beginning June 16 without reasonable excuse.

Allen pleaded not guilty to this offense while also explaining in court why he missed court dates on the charge of handling stolen goods.

Allen claimed he missed his last court date because he had contracted COVID-19 and had sent his doctor’s note with a relative to the court. He had recovered by New Year’s Day January 1 but was detained by police, who did not allow him to sign in as required by his bail conditions.

After receiving disclosure Allen will be tried for being a member of a gang on March 27, 2024.

He was granted bail on the new charge of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount which he was able to meet and returns to court on February 19, 2024.

Allen is not allowed under his new bail conditions to move from his residence on Laura Dunn Street; report to the Queen Street Police Station every Tuesday and Thursday and stay inside on curfew from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
