By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Moses ‘Shyne’ Barrow, the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and Leader of the Opposition, has conceded his seat in the Wednesday’s Belize General Elections to Lee Mark Chang.

“The people have spoken,” Barrow said after the results were out.

“Congratulations to Lee Mark Chang. He is now the new area representative for Mesopotamia, I wish him luck.

Barrow, who has been at the helm of the embattled UDP, was the incumbent in the Mesopotamia Division in Belize’s City’s South Side. He announced his intention to resign from his leadership position once a new leader is selected at a National Convention “from those who are qualified.”

“That’s how it works, when the ballots are counted, then you know how the people feel. And I said that all along; that we would see what it would be at the end. I was confident. That was the interactions that I was having with the people. They’ve decided to go in a different direction, and I respect that

Chang ran under a rival UDP faction headed by Tracy Panton.

Official reports say Barrow only garnered 318 points and lost both to Chang, who topped the division with 601 votes, and the People’s United Party’s Lawrence Ellis, who received 503.

This development marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Belize, as the UDP faces internal challenges and looks to rebuild under new leadership.
